The historic Timmins Estate in Westmount, a suburb of Montreal, has sold for C$18.5 million (US$14.37 million) in an off-market deal, making it the most expensive home in the province of Quebec, Canada.
The property was inspired by the 1800s Jacobethan-style architecture recently made famous by the titular estate in the BBC series “Downton Abbey”—which in reality is known as Castle Hampshire in England. The Timmins Estate was built in 1910 for Charles A. Smart, a politician, military man, mining investor, banker and entrepreneur, according to a previous listing with Sotheby’s International Realty.
According to the listing, the property was later owned by mining and railway titan Jules Timmins (1889-1971), hailed as the founding father of Canada’s mining industry and one of the big builders of the nation.
Dubbed “Downton Abbey of Westmount,” the property has hosted many world leaders and other notables over the years, including Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and chess prodigy Anatoly Karpov, according to the former listing.
Located on Sunnyside Avenue behind wrought iron fences, the estate has 10 bedrooms and 10 full bathrooms with panoramic city and river views. Interior details include artisan-carved double-wood doors, marble floors, wood-burning fireplaces with custom-made marble mantel, and a Cartier marble vanity in the primary bathroom.
The deal was brokered by luxury real estate agent Joseph Montanaro, who represented both the buyer and the seller.
The buyer of the property was Pinar Cetin, spouse of Rami Atallah, CEO and co-founder of the Montreal-based online luxury store Ssense.
Previously, the most expensive home in Quebec was a six-bedroom mansion in Westmount, which fetched C$18 million in 2020, Mansion Global reported.
